Boyfriends Everywhere Celebrate
A new report titled, "Game Changer: Investing in Digital Play to Advance Children's Learning and Health", shows that video games and digital media provide benefits to health and learning for children, which, let's face it, most boyfriends classify as. (No, not you honey!)
But, I have a tough time swallowing this little fun fact. How can spending hours (literally) staring at a computer or television aid a child's development?
According to the study:
"Children are choosing to play digital games for hours during their leisure time. On an average day, children as young as eight spend as many hours engaged in media activity as they spend in school; three-quarters of American children play computer and video games."
As a child, I was never allowed to sit inside the house for hours, even during the frosty Minnesota winters. "Outside is where kids should be", I heard over and over from my father. Perhaps, that's where my aversion to this idea of video games - even in general - has stemmed.
I won't draw a line in the sand so deep to say that SOME video games don't have an educational or physical benefit to the player. But, you don't hear about mass numbers of people becoming addicted to the likes of Sesame Street's "Color Me Hungry". It's far more common to hear of the societal impact of a game like "Grand Theft Auto". I mean, I've spent hours watching boyfriends pick up hookers and kill cops, while mumbling all kinds of inappropriateness to the player on the other side of the headset.
But then again, maybe I just have bad taste in boyfriends..
