Do You Grunt?
I hooked you, didn't I?
Exactly what happened to me yesterday when I was cruising Sunset Blvd in Hollywood and I saw a billboard that says "Do You Grunt?"...and I thought, "Huh?". Unfortunately, I thought a little too long, because I wasn't able to snap a picture of it.
*kicks self*
I Googled it today out of curiosity and was brought to this webpage www.savethegrunt.com. I discovered a wickedly clever micro-site campaign to raise awareness about the banning of grunting in tennis. Ultimately, the goal of the site is for visitors to sign the petition to "Save The Grunt". But, while you're there, why not listen, rate and even upload your own grunt, play a game to see if you can identify the grunter (I got them all correct!) or even enter The World Grunting Championships...yes, I'm serious.
Now, where do you think one gets a grunting coach?

I say ban it, grunting is seriously distracting and annoying. I don’t watch Tennis to see a bunch of women scream at the top of their lungs every time they hit the ball, I say ban it. As for Asher’s comment I doubt it has anything to do with their gender, men don’t grunt (or at least they shouldn’t either), even if they do it’s low. Alot of the women tennis players SCREAM like some cat in the middle of heat. It’s a huge distraction and annoyance. |

This website is owned by sports and entertainment conglomerate Anschutz Entertainment Group (part owner of the Lakers, among other franchises). What I can’t see is the business angle in setting up this website and buying billboards directing people to it. AEG does not appear to have much of a business interest in tennis. It’s a good viral campaign, but to what end? |

Well, AEG owns and operates The Home Depot Center which is the site of many national tennis tournaments, including The LA Women’s Tennis Championships (two ad banners are conveniently placed on savethegrunt.com). So, in my opinion, the angle is awareness. Get people buzzing about women’s tennis, a typically untalked about sport, bring it into the spotlight, make some headlines and perhaps sell more tickets. If awareness is the idea, they are doing a great job. I’ve got as much interest in women’s tennis as I do in my cousin’s collection of troll dolls, yet, I’m here having a discussion about it with a handful of strangers. |
