Leggings are not pants

Leggings Are Not Pants and Other Musings on Fashion

Note: My entry is not completely about the horrid ‘leggings can work as pants’ movement.  Rather, the title is what it is simply because I feel like it is my civic duty to inform the public of this fantastic fashion flaw.  Girls everywhere, it is not an attractive look, even if you have the legs for it.
My entry is about a fashion situation much dire, much more pressing.  The fact that this couture can be sold as such is not only telling about the state of fashion in America, but it probably explains some of the issues we’ve had in international relations as well (Side Note: Everyone check cnn, bbc, nyt…whatever your preferred news source is.  The situation in Iran is incredibly fascinating and illuminates the importance of civic engagement, to say the least). My friends, this entry is about the eyesore (or place of wonder and happiness, depending on which side of the issue you sit) called American Apparel.
I’ll start off by saying I have a love/hate relationship with American Apparel.  Thing I like: some of their stuff, that the founder/CEO went to my alma mater, that it’s just so gosh darn colorful.  Things that I take issue with: number one, the ads (I mean arty? Yeah I guess.  Able to foster body issues? Yeah more likely…though I do like the fact that they are so spoofable…google ‘american apparel spoofs’ and see what I mean). Number two, the metallic leggings for tots.

  Toddler in Gold Leggings
In my opinion, there is only one infant cool enough to get away with metallic leggings, M.I.A.’s newborn child.  I mean, M.I.A. is pretty much given a free pass to outfit her child however she wants because she is the essence of cool.  I won’t say no one else, but no one else should be allowed to dress their children in such things.  The idea of it is cool, yes, but is it necessary to dress one’s child up as if she’s going to the club? They say that kids are growing up faster and faster, but this? This is taking it a step too far.  American Apparel, if anyone has to wear leggings, please let them be old enough to say the word and spell it backwards.

It is about time someone had the gumption to say it. The leggings trend has gone all out of hand. Will somebody please think of the children?!
