Picture Perfect or Deadly Trend

victoria beckham

Picture perfect actors and actresses with gleaming smiles and tight bodies infiltrate every form of media today. Hollywood has always filled itself with men and woman that posses an ‘other-world’ glamour, that’s why they are called stars. However, these days it has gotten out of hand. Make-up, air-brushing, designer clothes and money make the ordinary extraordinary and every celeb’s face looks like a piece of art. Eating disorders and crash diets make stars and the people who want to look like them skinny and unhealthy.
The images that celebrity’s publicists create for them are superficial yet make very real people strive to copy them. The faultless pictures of these people are hard enough to stomach even with the knowledge that underneath everything is an imperfect human being. The expectations these people set for weight and fitness are unbearable. The only thing expensive hair-cuts, designer make-up and clothes hurt are your wallet and maybe your self esteem (when you don’t look exactly like Blake Lively or Zac Efron). Weight issues and insecurities can knock out your self-esteem and be a major health hazard. This is all general knowledge but the issue keeps getting worse.
The percentage of eating disorders has gone up and is afflicting younger girls more than ever. Even so the media continues to push ‘stick thin’ relentlessly.  Just a glance at the old vs. new 90210 casts is one example of how waist lines keep shrinking.
What scares me is how persuasive media is. The glossy magazine covers do their job and draw attention and begrudging admiration. Even though I am adamantly against this bony trend I still feel inadequate after flipping through Cosmo’s pages. These waif-thin prodigies are like Prada clad ghouls, they haunt my mind and whisper words of warning when I grab that Hershey’s bar. If the situation keeps deteriorating what are my children’s idols going to look like?
