Summer Jobbing, Having Some Fun…No

Posted in: Youth Culture      (0) Comments

    unemployed storm trooper

Unlike in Grease, this summer I am not feeling the summer lovin’.  Why, you may ask? It is because I cannot, for the life of me, find a job that will pay me.  I’m not alone in this…most of the people I went to school with are having hard times finding summer work, and talking to my cousin in high school I know that high schoolers are having an equally difficult time.

Where are the jobs? I know the economy is bad (one of the reasons I’m currently doing an unpaid internship, I want to build the skills I’ll need to get into marketing and advertising and seem like a worthwhile bet), but this happened even before the recession hit.  Filling out paper applications, or those dreaded hour long applications online (no, I do not want to fill in that required field, I only have had one relevant job! I haven’t asked my future reference to be my reference yet, but I really want to apply!) is not only stressful, but rarely gets the results you want.

Apart from the Gap, where, let’s be honest, all the girls you’ve ever met have worked at some point, there are no jobs to be had, at least for me.  And I feel that I have many skills: in addition to you know, doing okay in school, I also have talents as diverse as being an incredible ice cream taster to an excellent envelope addresser.  I have talked to people once or twice, in person, on the phone, via the internet...people skills can be checked off the list.  Literacy, check, restaurant/retail experience (I’ve been in stores and restaurants before?!?), check, able to lift over 20 lbs, errr…we’ll say check?

Really, Obama, or Congress, or job makers out there, hear my cry.  I want a job. I am old enough to have a job and my parents are going to stop funding dinners out with friends and repeat trips to see Up. Fifty years ago at my age, people were married, making babies, and being part of the rat race.  I don’t necessarily need to be out in the grind, I just need even a Starbucks gig to get me by.  Are you out there Starbucks? It’s me, Laura…and I’m in desperate need for some summer lovin.
